Comfortable

The other day while studying the book of Numbers, I could not seem to stop using the word comfortable. If you’ve read Numbers, you may wonder why in the world that word would come to my mind more than once.

Anyway, I vowed to not repeat it again and of course I caught myself doing it once more, and then at the end of the day there it was again! So, I decided to look into it.

Interestingly enough, comfortable fits the situation in Numbers in more ways than I realized.

While exploring the study I had referred to the Israelites as becoming too comfortable and thus complacent, to which we compared the example of those Israelites to Christians today as we’re called to stay awake and of sober mind.

The first two definitions of comfortable that came after my query were: 1. Providing physical ease and relaxation, and 2. As large as needed or wanted. Both examples as an adjective.

I also took notice of the noun definition of course; “a warm quilt”. Being a person who values a good quilt and has been known to make a few, that one made me smile.

Digressing as always, I forced myself back to the subject of comfortable. As I explored the word and how it is different from “comfort” I landed on the goodness of being comfortable in our skin, with good company, in rest, and most importantly in relationship to the Lord as being highly favored and within the goodness of God’s blessing. Being comfortable with things that are not pleasing to God is not okay. IE: ungodliness, lies, immorality, distasteful things you wouldn’t say to Grandma, Galatians 5:19-21, anything that does not line up with Galatians 5:22-23.

So, there ya have it! Galatians 5 is such a thorough guide to “comfortable”. Much better than the web or even the dictionary. The GOOD Book lays it out in Truth, you’re either comfortable in bondage, or comfortable in freedom. The choice is up to you; there are only two.
